In what can be termed as the first step to overhaul the country's judicial system, a bill aiming at ensure the accountability of judges is likely to be introduced in Parliament during the winter session next month. The Judges (Inquiry) Bill provides for setting up a National Judicial Council (NJC) to probe any misconduct by a judge of the Supreme Court or High Courts. Under the new law, a judge against whom prima facie evidence of an illegal act is found, will be asked not to attend courts pending an inquiry, and if found guilty, he will be asked to resign or he will be removed. |
