By Network on August 25,2006

Amid all the ongoing nationwide protests, the controversial quota Bill to provide 27% reservation for OBCs in Central educational institutions was tabled in the Lok Sabha by HRD Minister Arjun Singh.

It says that 27 per cent seats reservation for OBCs in admission in the Central educational institutions besides 15 per cent for SCs and 7.5 per cent for STs.

The Bill’s provisions will not apply to minority educational institutions.

While the government has brought the Bill covering the Central institutions, a similar Bill for unaided institutions is likely to be taken up at a later stage.

The Bill, which was cleared by the Cabinet on Monday, is expected to be taken up for consideration only in the next session of Parliament during winter.

Meanwhile doctors and medical students have decided to suspended their agitation against the government's decision to introduce reservation for Other Backward Classes in educational institutions, for three months as Parliament's Monsoon Session concludes on Friday
