Clearly all is not well in the back channels as far as Indopak relations are concerned as just days after both countries had a direct diplomatic showdown, Pakistan’s high commissioner to Sri Lanka, Col. Bashir Wali Mohammad (Retd), has accused India’s intelligence agency the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) of having masterminded the attempt on his life in Colombo a few weeks ago.
It may be recalled that the attack took place in the heart of Colombo on August 14, Pakistan’s Independence Day, while the high commissioner was on his way to attend a function after hoisting his country’s flag at the high commission. The Indian and South African cricket teams were also in nearby hotels when the blast took place. While Col. Wali had a narrow escape; a number of Sri Lankan commandos escorting him had been killed, as well as three civilian bystanders.
Speaking to reporters in Pakistan, Col. Wali alleged that the Indian government had been upset at his appointment and also accused retired Indian intelligence official B. Raman for writing articles in Sri Lankan newspapers urging the island nation’s government not to accept his (Wali’s) credentials as high commissioner.
