New Rules For College Elections: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has laid down some rules for college elections saying that  there should be no funding from political parties and the expenditure should be limited to Rs 5,000.

Moreover, no procession or public meeting can be held outside the campus and only hand made posters will be allowed, which means that printed posters are not allowed.

Further, no personal criticism will be permitted during the campaigns.

Taking into account the Sabharwal case, the Supreme Court has also said that the police would have to provide security to the persons conducting elections.

With regard to the age limit, it has been set as between 17-22 years for undergraduates and 17-25 years for postgraduates.

Also, only full time candidates allowed to contest the elections and candidates should have no criminal record.

They should also submit the details of expenditure to their college authorities within two weeks.

The Supreme Court's order is an interim order that follows the recommendations of the JM Lyndoh Committee recommendations.
