New Special Protective Clothing For Soldiers Developed

By Network on October 12,2006

Considering the cold and inhuman climatic conditions in Siachen and other high altitude areas, researchers in Gujarat along with the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), have designed a wide range of specialized textiles for the country’s defense personnel.

A special body suit designed to conserve body heat in the inhospitable climes of the Himalayas is being made available to the Army.  The suit for a single soldier would now cost Rs 10,000 whereas an imported equivalent was priced at Rs 90,000.

Another product is bandages prepared from the shells of crustaceans like crabs and prawns. The material, called chitosan possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties and a bandage coated with it stops the growth of bacteria in wounds.

The DRDO is however subjecting the fabric to further tests before clearing it for use by the Army. Meanwhile the special bandages may now be readied for civilian use as well.
