Communications Satellite To Be Relaunched Next Year
By Network on July 29,2006
Try and try again until u succeed seems to be ISRO's new mantra as Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), G Madhavan Nair has aid that its telecommunication satellite, which failed to take off earlier this month, would be re-launched next year. ISRO scientists have been closely examining the causes behind the failed launch of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). India's attempts to launch its heaviest satellite failed on July 10 when the GSLV carrying it went into a tail-spin about a minute after it took off and disintegrated. The rocket carrying the 2.2-tonne telecommunications satellite veered off its course after what appeared to be a textbook launch. The satellite was designed for a mission life of 10 years and was aimed at boosting television services. If the launch had been successful, it would have given India a chance to take a slice of the two billion dollar global satellite launch market. The Indian space agency is investing 543-million dollars to upgrade infrastructure for launching heavier rockets to carry satellites weighing up to four tonnes. The agency is also preparing for an unmanned mission to the moon called "Chandrayaan" in 2008 in association with NASA.
