Love him or hate him but you just cannot afford to ignore him. Yes that’s true in the case of one of India's most controversial politicians in recent times, Lalu Prasad Yadav. He might be in the news for all the wrong reasons but now the Railway Minister will be studied at the premier Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, (IIMA) for his "street-smart attitude" and "corporate perspective" that helped in scripting the success story of Indian Railways.
Management students at Harvard University learnt last month of the changes in railway operations brought about by Lalu Prasad, resulting in greater profits for the ministry in the last one year.
The case study is the brainchild of IIMA professor G. Raghuraman who has been a keen researcher of the Indian rail network. Now his case study is being given final touches before being introduced at IIMA.
Once the case study is introduced, students are expected to raise questions and seek answers regarding the plans implemented and changes initiated by the railway ministry.
While stressing that Indian Railways still needs several changes to become more efficient, Raghuraman is not very optimistic of the progress continuing once the duo of Lalu Prasad and aide Sudheer Kumar move out.
So are the fast-paced initiatives and innovative ideas of the minister and his aides to utilize optimally the assets of the railways just a passing phase or will the railways continue its upswing even after Lalu is gone? Well that’s something only time will tell but one thing is certain that if our politicians and other public servants have a will, we can fix this scary looking Indian jigsaw puzzle of mismanagement, corruption and lawlessness.
