India Takes Up The Matter Of Student's Killing With Russia
By Network on September 29,2006
In the wake of suspected racial killing of an Indian medical student
in St Petersburg four days
back, the Indian authorities have taken up with the matter of security issue with Russian authorities.
The Indian Consulate in
St Petersburg is in close touch with the family of the deceased Nitish Kumar
Singh and are assisting them, Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Navtej
Sarna said on Thursday.
Two
senior consuls were sent to the hostel and are in close touch with the Russian
authorities and the students body there, Sarna
said.
The consulate has taken
up with the Russian authorities the issue of security for Indian nationals, he
said.
The 27-year-old final
year medical student, was stabbed to death at St Petersburg in a suspected case
of racial attack. Singh a student of Mechnikov Medical Academy, was attacked
near his hostel.
The police,
who have lodged a criminal case, do not rule out "racial hatred" behind the
killing of the student.
The
killing has triggered large scale protests by Indian students in St
Petersburg.
In April another
Indian medical student was attacked on the same spot. However, he could be
saved.
St Petersburg has a
large foreign student population and is known for attacks on foreigners and
extreme nationalism.
