Hindus In EU Oppose Proposed Swastika Ban

Hindus across Europe have joined hands in an effort to fight an attempt led by Germany to ban the use of swastikas in the EU because of its association with Nazis.

German Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, said earlier this month that the country wanted to make Holocaust denial punishable by law, including a prohibition on Nazi symbols, in every member state of the European Union.

The Hindu Forum of Britain (HFB), an umbrella organization of about 275 Hindu organizations said that they are trying to educate the concerned authorities about the history of swastika which predates Nazi use by about 4,940 years and is completely unrelated to whatever the Nazi Party stood for.

According to Ramesh Kallidai, secretary general of the Hindu Forum of Britain (HFB), a ban on swastikas is an abuse on human rights Hindu ceremonies are never concluded without the swastika, so it's actually discrimination against Hindus, an abuse of human rights."

This is not the first time that a Hindus have been abused and hurt by religious fanatics of other western countries. Hindu gods or goddesses have been used to sell products like alcohol and shoes. Malaysian authorities went one step ahead last year and demolished a century-old Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur, bulldozing the building.

Hindu groups based in United Kingdom had launched a website to attract attention on the issues surrounding the alleged harassment of Russian Hindus by the country's Orthodox Church and the government.

The website www.defendrussianhindus.org - launched by the Defend Russian Hindus Campaign include 'a history of the harassment of Russian Hindus, latest news about the campaign, press stories, downloadable presentations, pictures and documents and contact details for sending protest letters'.

Hindus who have traditionally been seen as 'passive' are now beginning to react quickly every time a defamatory statement or picture appears.
