Dean Jones Sacked Over Racist Comment

By Network on August 07,2006

Former Australian test player and now a successful cricket commentator, Dean Jones was immediately sacked by his employers, Ten Sports after he was heard referring the South African Muslim batsman Hashim Amla as a terrorist.

Jones, who admitted making the comment and apologized, was on a TV commentary team covering the second test between Sri Lanka and South Africa in Colombo.

Amla, is a devout Muslim who wears a beard for religious reasons and has successfully negotiated with the South African team's main sponsors, SA Breweries, not to wear the Castle Lager logo on his playing and practice gear.

According to a statement issued by Cricket South Africa viewers heard Jones say, "the terrorist has got another wicket" when Amla took the catch that dismissed Kumar Sangakkara.

Meanwhile Dean Jones has admitted his mistake "I have no end of respect for the Muslim faith - that's why I'm so sorry at making such a stupid comment," he said while leaving Colombo.

However Cricket South Africa is likely to take up the issue with the International Cricket Council (ICC) which is the governing body for cricket worldwide.
