A theatre group in northern Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh chose a unique way of honoring India's literary genius, Munshi Premchand on his 125th birth anniversary by enacting two of his stories in a puppet show.
The organizer of the puppet show, Lavkush Dwivedi, said he wanted the present generation to learn from Premchand's fables.
The show was based on stories Shatranj Ke Khiladi which is set in colonial India and dwells on the politics of expansion by the British and the division of local Indian rulers and Kafan which is about a poor man who collects money for his dead wife's shroud, but his personal needs take precedence over his wife's funeral.
A literary genius of his times, Premchand's real name was Dhanpat Rai but he is famous with his pen name of Premchand or Munshi Premchand. Premchand wrote nearly 300 stories and novels. Among his best-known novels are Rangmanch, Gaban, Nirmala and Godan.
Much of Premchand's best work is to be found among his 250 short stories, collected in Hindi under the title of "Mansarovar". Three of his works, including "Shatranj Ke Khiladi" have also been made into films.
